ANNOUNCEMENT: HALF-ELF VERB CONTEST!
Author: GS4-ZYLLAH
Date: 6/19/2008 11:51:28 PM
Petitioning players of pariahs! Now is your chance to help your half-elf stand out from the crowd.
This is a verb messaging contest open to any player who has an at least somewhat actively played half-elf character on their account. These verbs will function like the wedding verbs, where half-elven characters can set the verbs individually to the default messaging or the messaging available only to half-elves.
Here's the rules:
1.) Contest entries must be emailed to me at GS4-ZYLLAH(at)PLAY.NET on or before July 15, 2008. (I will not be emailing confirmation of received entries.)
2.) One entry per account. The account must have an at least somewhat actively played half-elven character on it.
3.) One verb per entry.
4.) The entry must use the contest form provided below.
5.) There will be 2-5 verbs selected, depending on the quality of entries and how many verbs we decide to actually implement.
6.) Prizes will be given to entries selected for inclusion in the game. The prize will be your choice of a feature alteration or a custom tattoo. The prize must be collected by your half-elven character.
7.) We reserve the right to edit winning messaging for actual use in the game.
How the verbs work:
As stated above, these verbs will be available to all half-elven characters to use. They will be able to be toggled on and off with the VERB command so players can choose if they wish to use the default messaging or the half-elven version.
Almost any RP verb already available can be used (no new verb suggestions), but careful thought should be given to your choices. The verb should have some sort of logical relationship to the messaging. You should not choose a verb that already has built-in options available, such as GRIN. The messaging should be something that you think a significant number of half-elves would like to use, and not something that only suits your character. The messaging can be situation-specific, such as something you think a half-elf might be more prone to use when in Ta'Vaalor, as opposed to Wehnimer's Landing.
Please use the following form in your email submission. The subject heading of your email should read: HALF-ELF VERB CONTEST.
Account name:
Half-elf character name:
Game instance (Plat or Prime?):
Verb:
First person messaging:
Second person messaging (if a targeted verb):
Third person messaging:
Good luck and happy message writing!
Zyllah
p.s. For Plat players, if your entry wins and your character exists in both Plat and Prime you can receive the prize in both instances, provided you want the same feature or tattoo on both versions of your character.

Erithian Clothing Documentation
Author: GS4-XYNWEN
Date: 4/9/2008 9:08:01 PM
Just as sort of a "welcome" present, the below documentation is ready for release! Please note that merchants will NOT be able to alter items into these new nouns yet. I will be running a traveling merchant and making my way through the cities. Once I'm done with that, then it'll be opened up for other merchants. Basically, the premise is that this merchant will be lecturing to all the tailors and seamstresses in various areas and training them on the intricacies of the clothing.
The Dress of the Erithi
From a notice sent to the Scholars of Ta'Illistim for immediate dispatch to any interested party.
Due in part to our natural reticence, the unique quality of erithian dress has been a source of admiration, but also confusion, since making our presence known. As such, many of the traveling erithi have adopted local forms of dress or modified their normal clothing. For those that choose to wear the traditional garb, both formal and utilitarian, finding a tailor that can properly craft it has been impossible. For that reason, I have tasked one of our best tailors to provide an explanation of the intricacies of our traditional attire and to travel the expanse of Elanith. Talented though he may be, however, I do realize he will never be able to seek out all traveling erithi and proffer the comforts of home dress. Thus, I hope that the tailors and seamstresses of these other lands will pay close attention to his descriptions below and learn the craft of fine erithian sewing.
1 Ivastaen 5107
Chief Scholar Isienaka of the Eloth Dai
~~~Erithian *Clothing:* A Guide~~~
I am Vithalan of the Tichan Dai, and I have the great honor to be a tailor to many important personages in Eloth-Ra. I am but a simple man, a humble tailor, and as such, my writing is less elegant than one of our scholars. Pray forgive me, but our elders felt I would be best able to describe our clothing, despite my lack of a silvered written tongue, and so, I have given it my best try.
The first item of importance when understanding attire of the erithi is that each garment has functional and formal versions which are readily apparent at a glance. Functional clothing consists of sturdier materials, simpler patterns, in essence, less "fuss" for our daily tasks. Formal clothing radiates color and cheerful excess of fine fabrics. While some sewing is obviously involved, much of the art of Erithian dress comes in the intricate folding of materials.
Typical dress consists of an atika or an elothrai, an isiqiri, an atanika, nanjir or kanjir, and a pair of yatane. Oftentimes, you will also see a vatanura. Of course, for our more adventuresome erithi, I have heard it is more and more common to wear any one of these items with foreign clothing. For example, someone might choose to wear a common skirt with an atanika, despite the obvious clash! Ah, but I get ahead of myself, as the terms I am using must surely be confusing to the non-erithi. I shall explain myself forthwith, and again, let me apologize for my lack of written poetry.
When the erithi embroider or adorn clothing, we do so most often with scenes of natural wonder and beauty. Flora and serene fauna are most common. The use of color is most prevalent in formal wear, but it is not unheard of to have splashes of elegance and color even in our daily attire. As a side note, when pluralized, none of the clothing changes form or pronunciation. Also, when referring in general to an item that has gender specific versions, you would utilize the feminine form. For example, a store sells atanika, not atanikas, nor atanika and ataniki. Atanika alone suffices, but you would state that all the men wore ataniki, since you are only referring to men at that point.
Enough of the brief language lesson and on to the clothing!
Below, I explain each clothing item in detail. When such items are commissioned, please be exact, for an atanika fit for a party looks quite different from an atanika for a day at the wharves.
Atika (aw TEE kuh): our women's headwear, the atika is starched in a series of three or more wave-like peaks flowing back from the forehead. In everyday use, the atika is typically simple linen or raw silk, occasionally dyed, but never patterned or embroidered. Indeed, many do not even wear an everyday atika, preferring a bare head. Formally, however, the atika is a work of art, consisting of many bright hues in silks and linens. Embroidered within an inch of its life, the formal atika will often have a back-flowing veil. Acceptable materials: Most cloth, but preferably linens, muslins, and silks. Unacceptable materials: Wool, leather, suede, or any other thick, unwieldy material.
Atiki (aw TEE kee): the headgear of our men, the atiki is quite similar to the atika, but instead of arched waves, the atiki sweeps back at the crown and folds inward along the edges. Again, everyday-use atiki are made of linens with metal-clasped folds. Formal atiki clasps are elaborate, however, such as gold filigree clasps shaped like dolphins in mid-leap or an elegant crane amid the rushes. Like the atika, formal atiki utilize lush silks and linens in myriad hues and are often heavily embroidered. Acceptable materials: Most cloth, but preferably linens, muslins, and silks. Unacceptable materials: Wool, leather, suede, or any other thick, unwieldy material.
Elothrai (ehl ohth RAY): The erithian version of a ferroniere, the elothrai is a forehead-worn gem suspended from a fine chain. The scholars of the erithi originally wore these to signify their "inner sight" or wisdom, but the elothrai were so beautiful that men and women alike quickly adopted the decoration. Each Dai has its own signature agate for use in the elothrai, but all choose their own agate at personal whim anyway. In erithian, "eloth" means sky and "rai" is a truncation of either raiyatha (soul) or raiyartha (agate). It is amusing to this humble tailor that the jewelry designed by scholars has become a matter of debate amongst them, as there are differing schools of thought (and hence dissertations, arguments, and even petty quibbling) as to whether or not it is soul or agate. I personally believe the original one who bestowed the name left it intentionally ambiguous to spark just such debate, and even now, they look down upon us and chuckle from the skies. Acceptable materials: Any agate for the gem. Unacceptable materials: any other gem or stone. An elothrai is always made with an agate, and it is always on a chain of sorts, never a solid piece of material like a circlet.
For those interested, the traditional agates for each Dai are:
Eloth Dai: Owleye agate
Surath Dai: Drought agate
Nalatha Dai: Nalatha agate
Yachan Dai: Summer agate
Tichan Dai: Storm agate
Valaka Dai: Beetle agate
Isiqiri (iss ih KEER ee): The isiqiri is a shirt, but of a very particular cut. The sleeves always come to the wrist and are cuffed in some manner. Isiqiri have short, stiff and upright collars which are unfolded and rise one to two fingers above the shirt. They are buttoned, often in a matching style to the manner of cuffing, but often the method of buttoning is hidden by an overflap of material. Everyday isiqiri are of raw silk or basic linens, while the formal have a greater range. However, since isiqiri are typically worn under an atanika, they are usually less elaborately embroidered, even in formal attire. There is no appreciable difference between male and female cuts of an isiqiri. Acceptable materials: Most cloth materials, but preferred materials are linens, muslins, and silks. For truly rugged professions, coarse materials like broadcloth are occasionally used. materials: Wools, suedes, leathers.
Atanika (aw tawn EEK uh) and Ataniki (aw tawn EEK ee): Women wear atanika, the showpiece garment of our traditional garb. An atanika is a multi-layered robe with a center line opening. An ataniki, for the men, is essentially the same garment except that the cut allows a left-line wrap instead of center line. For everyday atanika, the sleeves are of a smaller bell, the vatanura (sashes) are optional, and the length is just above the knee. While some choose to keep their atanika simple and utilitarian for daily use, most erithi prefer embroidered layers of silks, linens, and other fine materials. Formal atanika are quite elaborate. All atanika do have inner ties to hold the garment together, even if a vatanura is not worn, but using the ties is also a matter of personal preference. Depending on the climate, atanika might be lined with warmer materials, such as wool or fur. Acceptable materials: Silks, linens, satins, velvets, and muslins. Wool or fur is only acceptable for lining or accents. Unaccepatable materials: Leathers, suedes, and most other stiff materials.
Allow me a brief sidenote, if you will, on the atanika. Some believe that the differing openings are symbolic in nature. Like all such opinions, no definitive answer exists, but I have always found it fascinating. The symbolism in the center line opening is that women are our centering presence and thus their atanika opens along the center line of the body, while men are driven by the bloodrush from the heart and thus ataniki open along the heart side, or left side, of the body. More prosaic women suggest that a man originally designed the garment with the left-bound opening, and his pregnant wife quickly disabused him of that notion, preferring a cut that allowed her burgeoning belly to protrude in comfort. As I said, beliefs vary, but regardless of the origin, men would not wear an atanika, nor women an ataniki.
Vatanura (vaw taw NYUR uh): This is a side-tied waist sash made from elaborately folded cloth. Vatanura are never sewn together, although they can be embroidered if desired. Exceptionally cleverly made vatanura often have a small inner pocket for a key or other tiny trinket. Acceptable materials: any cloth that is not overly stiff. Unacceptable materials: leather, suede, metals.
Nanjir (nan JHEER): Buttoned below the knee, nanjir are similar to other culture?s breeches. They are always made roomy, never skintight or even remotely fitted, so they flare out at the hips and thighs. Men and women alike wear nanjir. While most nanjir are relatively simple in adornments, it is not unheard of to see a heavily embroidered pair made to match a formal atanika. Acceptable materials: Most cloth materials, even the coarser ones, plus leather and suede.
Kanjir (kan JHEER): As an alternative to the nanjir, women sometimes opt to wear kanjir, a tight-fitted legging that terminates at the ankle. Tradition dictates that all kanjir have at least one piece of agate sewn on them somewhere, and women are often seen wearing kanjir with a kanjiqi. Acceptable materials: Any soft cloth, such as velvet, silks, satins, or linens. It is not unheard of, although rare, to have a coarser material such as broadcloth, sailcloth, or wool. Unacceptable materials: Suedes and leathers.
Kanjiqi (kan JHEE kee): Kanjiqi are thigh-sheaths that erithian women wear with kanjir. Crafted to hold a small dagger or similar weapon, the small sheaths are worn mid- to upper-thigh and can be a fingersbreadth or a handspan in width. Young, unmarried erithi often prefer the more "enhancing" aspects of a kanjir-kanjiqi combination and wear it frequently. Nanjir are not designed for kanjiqi, and anyone wearing them together would look utterly ridiculous. Acceptable materials: Most cloth material and suedes and leathers. Metals, woods, etc may be used for adornment. Unacceptable materials: Any metals, woods, bones, that sort of rigid material.
Yatane (yaw taw NEE): Yatane are typical erithian shoes. While we often prefer to wear sandals woven from rushes when relaxing or just walking to the market, shoes are more practical for many tasks and are preferred for formal events. Yatane are ankle-length, low-heeled, and have gently pointed toes. Most materials are acceptable for yatane, and as is common, yatane range from sturdy and practical to fancy. Acceptable materials: Any materials shoes would normally be made from, so most cloths, leathers, suedes. Unacceptable materials: Inflexible materials like metals. Woods and rushes can be used for the undersoles, but not for the rest of the yatane.
I hope this has been a useful guide. If, however, there are still questions, I will, as tasked, be visiting many towns and cities where erithi reside now, and I shall impart my knowledge to as many tailors and seamstresses as I can find.
Signed this 15th day of Ivastaen, 5107
There is no appreciable difference between male and female cuts of an isiqiri. Acceptable materials: Most cloth materials, but preferred materials are linens, muslins, and silks. For truly rugged professions, coarse materials like broadcloth are occasionally used. materials: Wools, suedes, leathers.
Atanika (aw tawn EEK uh) and Ataniki (aw tawn EEK ee): Women wear atanika, the showpiece garment of our traditional garb. An atanika is a multi-layered robe with a center line opening. An ataniki, for the men, is essentially the same garment except that the cut allows a left-line wrap instead of center line. For everyday atanika, the sleeves are of a smaller bell, the vatanura (sashes) are optional, and the length is just above the knee. While some choose to keep their atanika simple and utilitarian for daily use, most erithi prefer embroidered layers of silks, linens, and other fine materials. Formal atanika are quite elaborate. All atanika do have inner ties to hold the garment together, even if a vatanura is not worn, but using the ties is also a matter of personal preference. Depending on the climate, atanika might be lined with warmer materials, such as wool or fur. Acceptable materials: Silks, linens, satins, velvets, and muslins. Wool or fur is only acceptable for lining or accents. Unaccepatable materials: Leathers, suedes, and most other stiff materials.
Allow me a brief sidenote, if you will, on the atanika. Some believe that the differing openings are symbolic in nature. Like all such opinions, no definitive answer exists, but I have always found it fascinating. The symbolism in the center line opening is that women are our centering presence and thus their atanika opens along the center line of the body, while men are driven by the bloodrush from the heart and thus ataniki open along the heart side, or left side, of the body. More prosaic women suggest that a man originally designed the garment with the left-bound opening, and his pregnant wife quickly disabused him of that notion, preferring a cut that allowed her burgeoning belly to protrude in comfort. As I said, beliefs vary, but regardless of the origin, men would not wear an atanika, nor women an ataniki.
Vatanura (vaw taw NYUR uh): This is a side-tied waist sash made from elaborately folded cloth. Vatanura are never sewn together, although they can be embroidered if desired. Exceptionally cleverly made vatanura often have a small inner pocket for a key or other tiny trinket. Acceptable materials: any cloth that is not overly stiff. Unacceptable materials: leather, suede, metals.
Nanjir (nan JHEER): Buttoned below the knee, nanjir are similar to other culture?s breeches. They are always made roomy, never skintight or even remotely fitted, so they flare out at the hips and thighs. Men and women alike wear nanjir. While most nanjir are relatively simple in adornments, it is not unheard of to see a heavily embroidered pair made to match a formal atanika. Acceptable materials: Most cloth materials, even the coarser ones, plus leather and suede.
Kanjir (kan JHEER): As an alternative to the nanjir, women sometimes opt to wear kanjir, a tight-fitted legging that terminates at the ankle. Tradition dictates that all kanjir have at least one piece of agate sewn on them somewhere, and women are often seen wearing kanjir with a kanjiqi. Acceptable materials: Any soft cloth, such as velvet, silks, satins, or linens. It is not unheard of, although rare, to have a coarser material such as broadcloth, sailcloth, or wool. Unacceptable materials: Suedes and leathers.
Kanjiqi (kan JHEE kee): Kanjiqi are thigh-sheaths that erithian women wear with kanjir. Crafted to hold a small dagger or similar weapon, the small sheaths are worn mid- to upper-thigh and can be a fingersbreadth or a handspan in width. Young, unmarried erithi often prefer the more "enhancing" aspects of a kanjir-kanjiqi combination and wear it frequently. Nanjir are not designed for kanjiqi, and anyone wearing them together would look utterly ridiculous. Acceptable materials: Most cloth material and suedes and leathers. Metals, woods, etc may be used for adornment. Unacceptable materials: Any metals, woods, bones, that sort of rigid material.
Yatane (yaw taw NEE): Yatane are typical erithian shoes. While we often prefer to wear sandals woven from rushes when relaxing or just walking to the market, shoes are more practical for many tasks and are preferred for formal events. Yatane are ankle-length, low-heeled, and have gently pointed toes. Most materials are acceptable for yatane, and as is common, yatane range from sturdy and practical to fancy. Acceptable materials: Any materials shoes would normally be made from, so most cloths, leathers, suedes. Unacceptable materials: Inflexible materials like metals. Woods and rushes can be used for the undersoles, but not for the rest of the yatane.
I hope this has been a useful guide. If, however, there are still questions, I will, as tasked, be visiting many towns and cities where erithi reside now, and I shall impart my knowledge to as many tailors and seamstresses as I can find.
Signed this 15th day of Ivastaen, 5107
History of the Minotaurs.
Author: GS4-MESTYS
Date: 2/29/2008 12:48:34 AM
Many legends and fables surround the brutish creatures known as minotaurs, predominantly due to their relatively mysterious existence. Both their introverted nature and curious appearance lend themselves to the creation of such tales, effectively shrouding their true nature in secrecy. Possessing the midsection of a man with the head and rear legs of a bull, the bipedal creatures are known chiefly for their fearsome strength and prowess in battle. Despite their physical development and beastly nature, however, minotaurs are also rather intelligent creatures. Their mental acuity has allowed them to become adept stone carvers, nearly rivaling dwarves in their architectural achievements of the underground.
Comprised of great warriors and magically inclined magi, minotaur communities are usually led by their strongest warrior or most adept magus, though the ultimate decision is determined by a council of revered elders. Commonly, these kings and queens join the council themselves, when they have reached a venerable age no longer fit for combat.
Historically, little has been documented on minotaurs, though accounts have been recorded implying that they are very territorial, often exhibiting lethal aggression toward any who cross into their land. Perhaps the most notable showing of the minotaurs was during the Age of Chaos when a large contingent of their numbers, driven by avarice and blood lust, allied themselves with Despana's forces in the Undead War. Led by the warrior Tordaak, the minotaurs were among the fiercest of Despana's vast army, charging into battle to crush her enemies under hoof in the name of conquest.
During the elven assault on Despana's keep at Maelshyve, countless numbers of Tordaak's minotaur brethren were vanquished alongside the hordes of undead, yet the warrior himself would not be defeated. With the fall of Maelshyve and Despana herself, the remaining minotaurs scattered to the north, driven back during the chaos of the clash with the demons unleashed by the Faendryl.
The minotaurs who survived the Undead War trekked northward through the western slopes of the DragonSpine mountains, taking shelter in natural and makeshift cave systems. Skirmishes were frequent in their nomadic existence, but Tordaak's leadership and cunning always saw them through these conflicts with minimal casualties.
Years passed as the minotaurs' mobile mountainside community began to thrive. However, it was evident to Tordaak and the current council that the only way for their kin to truly re-establish themselves was to settle down permanently. Regular seismic activity shook the ground beneath their hooves, and the resultant fissures and avalanches were a constant threat.
Tordaak sent out parties of the minotaurs' most resilient scouts to seek out favorable grounds for a permanent home. Many weeks went by as the rest of the community anticipated both the return of the scouts and the opportunity to lay down the foundation for their new society. Finally, the first of the scouts began to filter back, with reports of their excursions into the mountains and beyond.
After hearing the details of the reports and studying the impromptu maps drawn by the scouts, the council decreed that the minotaurs would head west into the Dragonsclaw mountain range. Tordaak and the rest of the community set out with a renewed resolve in their hearts, knowing that they would reaffirm their legacy in Elanthia with a new age of minotaur.
The minotaurs traveled for months across the terrain, through forests and across lands that would one day be fortified by fortresses built by human hands. At last they reached their destination -- the mountain known as Wehntoph. The area was just as it had been described: steep slopes and craggy faces, a place where few outsiders would come to invade.
Excavation work began immediately on the top of a nearby plateau, and by the end of the first year of residence, the minotaurs' compound began to take shape. Elaborate tunnel systems ran deep into the plateau, both elegant and functional for the livelihood of the community. A cadre of the most skilled minotaur magi wove their magic into the walls, ensuring that no outsiders would ever be able to reliably navigate its passages. On the surface, lush gardens were cultivated near the temporary dwellings that were erected using the rock pulled from below.
The decades came and went as the old council and many of the elders passed away, yet neither Tordaak's strength nor his exuberance showed any signs of faltering. His longevity allowed him to witness the results of his labor as the first generation born into the new rock matured into adulthood. As the fledgling society grew, stories of the tribe's origins were passed down from elder to youth and recorded in masterful murals that decorated the cave walls. Tordaak came to be known as a living legend, the great and powerful leader who brought the minotaurs to the new land of prosperity.
Nearly four centuries passed since the minotaurs had arrived at their new home, and still Tordaak's inexplicable youth remained. Many believed him to be imbued with immortality by the gods themselves, while others theorized that the great warrior could not die outside of battle, but the truth was never to be known. Regardless of the origins of his power, Tordaak was ready when the invaders came.
The first incursion occurred deep within the lowest depths of the minotaurs' tunnels. The reinforced walls crumbled as the unknown beings emerged and began working their way upward. Tordaak lead his warriors against the swarm, scattering the creatures under the might of his battle axe. Though the minotaurs lost few of their own, there seemed to be no end to the forces pouring through the crevasse.
The ensuing assault lasted for days, and the minotaurs were slowly losing ground. Anticipating a disastrous outcome for their people, the council called for an evacuation to a cavern expansion further up the slopes of the Wehntoph. Though Tordaak respected the decision of the elders, he refused to accompany them in their retreat. A number of warriors and magi stayed behind with Tordaak, allowing the rest of their kin the opportunity to escape.
As the last of the refugees fled the plateau, Tordaak's mighty battle cry rang across the peaks, shaking the earth with a thunderous roar and sealing the fates of all who remained behind in an enormous avalanche. The foundations of the minotaur dwellings shook and crumbled, and the way to the plateau was lost. Those who survived of the minotaur tribe were shocked, as the steadfast pillar of their society had fallen, but respected his sacrifice as they made their way to the secondary cavern.
The minotaurs settled in to the new labyrinth and fortified its walls with powerful incantations specifically designed to prevent any further incursions through the ground. It is there that they remained for many generations, keeping mostly to themselves as the world continued to evolve around them.
No attempts were made to unearth the hallowed grounds of their previous home, both out of reverence for those who perished there in the battle and fear of reprisal from their powerful unknown adversary. Over time, even the location of the old labyrinth was lost, merely becoming another facet of Tordaak's legend.
Krag Slopes/Minotaur Labyrinth Rehaul.
Author: GS4-MESTYS
Date: 2/29/2008 12:48:30 AM
A number of creatures around the Wehntoph area in the region of Wehnimer's Landing have been updated. Krag dwellers, krag yetis, lesser minotaurs, minotaur magi, and minotaur warriors have all significantly increased in power and ability, spanning base levels of 70 to 78. Each of the creatures that were not previously governed by the Basic Critter System (BCS) were updated to utilize the system, and those that were already have been further enhanced.
Included in the update was the revealing of the new minotaur labyrinth, located off the western portion of the Upper Krag Slopes. The previous labyrinth has been cut off and will no longer be accessible. Those who wish to venture within would be wise to have a competent amount of Climbing skill.
The Fall of the House of Sulldina.
Author: GS4-MESTYS
Date: 2/29/2008 12:48:25 AM
In a final, desparate act, the minotaur magus Sulldina managed to remove the barrier from the doors leading to the very core of the recovered labyrinth. Where she anticipated triumph and acceptance from her tribe, she found only the ire of the spirit of Tordaak, who once again shook the cavern walls of the former violent battleground before disappearing into the night. A band of adventurers managed to unearth the doors from the partial collapse and force their way to the dark altar. Inside lay a battered Sulldina, critically wounded from the cave-in. In the delirium of her last breaths, the only question on her lips was, "Why?"
More Minotaur Madness!
Author: GS4-AUCHAND
Date: 2/28/2008 10:40:50 AM
Days of violent clashes between the newly empowered krag creatures and the minotaurs on the slopes of Wehntoph triggered a landslide, greatly changing the landscape of the mountain. The way to the minotaurs' home was lost, while the ancient ruins of a previous compound were unearthed. In desperation, the minotaurs fell back to the ancient site and began re-establishing their community. The former palace atop the plateau was constructed during the reign of the great minotaur warrior-king Tordaak, vacated during a cataclysmic battle against an unknown foe centuries ago.
Many brave adventurers have explored the newly accessible plateau and delved into the minotaurs' extensive labyrinth. They have found that the minotaurs have successfully barred the krag creatures from entering their newly re-inhabited compound, but there is some concern about just how much of the labyrinth the minotaurs have reopened and what may be lurking beyond doors that have yet to be unsealed...
Little has been seen of the minotaur magus Sulldina, who called upon the spirit of Tordaak to set these events in motion. While the other minotaurs and krag creatures grew in power, Sulldina did not. When she was last seen, shortly after the landslide, she was incoherent and despondent. Residents of nearby Wehnimer's Landing have expressed hope that she does not do anything more drastic in an attempt to gain the power she seeks.
A History of the Ferroniere
Author: GS4-XYNWEN
A History of the Ferroniere
Excerpt from the dissertation "A Detailed History of Jewelry and Lapidary: How Cultural and Philosophical Mores Influenced Our Adornments" by the High Lady Auvyra Vonnalaiel, Second Daughter of House Vonnalaiel of Illistim, Master Jeweler.
Chapter 10: Ferronieres
Origins
With the exception of the Aelotoi and the Half-Krolvin, all Elanith's races have developed, at times independently, a version of a forehead-centered gem suspended from a chain, generically termed a ferroniere. Due to their other-planar enslavement, it is obvious why the aelotoi did not develop this jewelry. Half-Krolvin present a trickier situation, but one theory is that enslavement and isolation kept them from being exposed to what some believe to be the root cause for this jewelry style: the forehead gem.
Rare and elusive, forehead gems possess unusual properties that allow them to adhere without benefit of chains to the wearer's forehead. True forehead gems number in the scant hundreds and surface only rarely in society. There are documented sightings of forehead gems(footnote 1) thousands of years back, and some cultures attribute them supernatural powers and qualities. The mystique, therefore, yielded a desire. The desire yielded a product: ferronieres.
Generally speaking, any gem on a chain(footnote 2) designed to be held at the center forehead is a ferroniere, and the term's origins are lost to antiquity. Despite onerous research, no one has ever discovered exactly when the word "ferroniere" appeared, nor where the term itself originated. From the forehead gem-inspired ferroniere, however, we have some racially and culturally specific versions which we can delineate.
Whether inspired by the mystical forehead gems or by fashion, the myriad examples of chained forehead jewelry are fascinating. Many people, regardless of culture or race, will choose a ferroniere fashioned to their own choosing rather than be limited to the specific variations described below. Thus, a human is equally, if not more likely, to wear a ferroniere rather than a seer-stone, for example.
Racial and Cultural Variations (footnote 3)
Seer-Stone: In the Kannalan Empire, wandering bands of gypsies and other fortunetellers adapted the mystique of the forehead gem by chaining an oval-cut gem they called a seer-stone, meant to represent their "third eye of inner vision." The seer-stones were alleged to enhance precognition, but no verifiable powers have been recorded. Ladies in the Empire adopted the seers' jewelry which influenced any number of others, and the seer-stone has gone in and out of vogue with the humans ever since. Any oval-cut gem suspended length-wise upon a chain as if to form a third eye would be considered a human empire-styled seer-stone.
Geldaralad: High Lady Kysandriana Vonnalaiel is credited with the creation of the first elven ferroniere. Illistim nobility, she came in contact (footnote 4) with a traveling troupe of gypsies and thus with the seer-stone. Upon returning to Ta'Illistim, the lady commissioned her jeweler to make one. Her jeweler, one Zishryth Aielel, hailed from the courts of Ta'Nalfein where he crafted extraordinary jewelry for nobility(footnote 5). A master jeweler the likes of which are rarely seen, he presented her with a gift worthy of a queen, a rose-cut cerulean glimaerstone incised with a vaalin-filled star at its heart. The glimaerstone was suspended from a twisted vaalin chain inset with minute flecks of complementing violet feystone. He named it a geld-aradlaiel, literally meaning "seer-stone" but it was quickly shortened to geldaralad, "stone of truth." Kysandriana's geldaralad outshone all other jewelry at a solstice masque that year, and soon, all the ladies of the nations were clamoring for one. To be a true geldaralad, and not the generic ferroniere, the chain must be twisted vaalin, but beyond that minor limitation, variety abounds. Of course, fashion often takes precedence over tradition, so many elven women will prefer a ferroniere with their metal of preference.
Ferrigem: Burghal gnomes residing in the Elven Nations saw the geldaralad sweep like wildfire across the cities, and, being ever fond of gems, they tried to create their own version, termed the ferrigem. While obviously a conflation of "ferrioniere" and "gem," it is uncertain why the gnomes blended ferroniere instead of geldaralad. Original ferrigems were crafted from pilfered bits and pieces, so the metal links rarely matched, and the gems were always slivers and shards, creating a piecemeal chain and gem concoction. Most ferrigem chains had at least one or two gears or gadgets interwoven into the links for no apparent cause other than they were discarded bits of metal that could be used. Thus, per Burghal gnome tradition, inexplicable as it may be, a ferrigem must have mismatched metal links and at least one tiny metal gear or gadget somewhere in the chain or used as the gem setting. While the pieces of ferrigems rarely need to be stolen any more, it is tradition to at least make the ferrigem look as randomly piecemeal as its ancestor, and Burghal men take pride in presenting their loved one with a true ferrigem even to this day.
Aemikvai: Giantmen, most likely influenced by the seer-stone due to the ties of the Kannalan Empire, have the aemikvai, and males and females alike wear it. The chain can be of any metal, but preferred metals include mithril and the very rare rolaren. Chains are most often twisted into stylized knotwork patterns, but it is not a requirement of the aemikvai. Settings of the aemikvai are always of intricate knotwork, and the stone is carved with a Saramar rune. The rune is chosen as something meaningful to the wearer, although there is no specific rule as to how it is chosen; it is tradition, and all aemikvai have them. While particular gems, stones, and metals are not required under giantman tradition, some follow even more strict traditional and spiritual guidelines when creating their aemikvai, and they believe the stone and metal selected will enhance specific, personal energies. Thus, it is not unheard of for aemikvai not to be simply ornamental jewelry, but to some, an essential element of battle garb.
Khazurka: While dwarves do have a ferroniere they term a khazurka, it never became widely accepted or even acknowledged. Developed by a craftsman in the city of Mithrenek, where they are known for their abilities to work mithril, the khazurka always has a mithril chain and a carved gem. Since its invention, small groups of dwarven women have worn khazurka, but it has never been widespread. Still, it is distinctive from generic ferronieres in that it must be dwarven-crafted mithril chain and the gem must be cut in some way, often with great detail. One such example was found(footnote 6)wherein the large, round-cut gem was also incised with precise detail, showing a mithril hammer crushing a banshee's head, a simplified homage to the statue at the gates of Mithrenek.
Basrenne: While other forest gnomes may wear a basrenne, it is most popular with its creators, the Basingstokes. Unusual in that tightly woven or linked reeds form the chain, the basrenne holds a gem or precious stone kept in its natural state, rather than over-polished, cut or otherwise contorted. Some families pass basrenne down through generations, wearing them only during private rites to Imaera, but it is not unheard of to see new basrenne at other times.
Trinette: Paradis Halflings created the trinette as an adornment for women to be worn during the celebration of the Trine, an annual Truefolk holiday. As the Trine refers to the three original branches of the Truefolk, the Paradis' creation has three key parts: a tri-stranded delicate metal chain, a trilliant-cut gem, and the elaborate metal setting.
Elothrai: Centered only with agate, elothrai were originally strictly for Erithi scholars, male and female, to indicate their "inner mind" and status. Elothrai were quickly adopted into mainstream Erithi culture, however, and each Dai has their own agate for use in an elothrai(footnote 7). Information is scarce, but I am told that few pay attention to which Dai they belong when selecting an agate for their elothrai, personal preference taking precedence.
A History of the Ferroniere
Excerpt from the dissertation "A Detailed History of Jewelry and Lapidary: How Cultural and Philosophical Mores Influenced Our Adornments" by the High Lady Auvyra Vonnalaiel, Second Daughter of House Vonnalaiel of Illistim, Master Jeweler.
Chapter 10: Ferronieres
Origins
With the exception of the Aelotoi and the Half-Krolvin, all Elanith's races have developed, at times independently, a version of a forehead-centered gem suspended from a chain, generically termed a ferroniere. Due to their other-planar enslavement, it is obvious why the aelotoi did not develop this jewelry. New Races - Maneuver Bonus
Author: GS4-WARDEN
Date: 5/31/2007 5:48:14 AM
It was discovered recently that of the new races, only the Erithian Maneuver bonus was implemented, resulting in all of the other new races being treated as "Average". This modifier applies to most non-CMAN maneuvers that creatures use. As of now, the other new races will receive the applicable bonuses.
Burghal Gnomes - Best
Halflings, Forest Gnomes, and Elves - Excellent (previously was the best)
Half-Elves, Dark Elves, Sylvankind, Erithians, and Aelotoi - Good
Everyone else - Average
Calling all scholars...Part Two!
Author: GS4-XAYLE
Date: 5/14/2007 9:17:33 PM
In reference to the knowledge symposium at the Lumnea festival, let me get the direly important official-type announcements out of the way.
These presentations, lectures, performances, etc, are for CREATIVE purposes only and will NOT be considered as OFFICIAL documentation, nor will they be added to the cannon of OFFICIAL documentation.
CREATIVE, NOT OFFICIAL.
Now that that's out of the way...
All entrants must be of pure elven heritage, no dark elves or half-elves, puhleeze. You can choose any aspect of elven culture you like, from style of dress to religion to military. Whatever strikes your fancy. These, however, are to be academic in nature, so approach them as you would a term paper. You have a point, you have evidence/hypothesis to support the point, and you have an overall conclusion. You can USE official documentation as references for your works, but again, your works themselves will NOT be considered OFFICIAL in any way. (My sponsors will flog me if I don't use capitalization). Be creative. Dazzle us with your deep ponderings of elvish nature, society, and culture. Creativity in concert with official documentation is what I'm looking for.
A lecture might be something like a commentary about the evolution of elven religion, a comparison between any facet of two or more cultures, or an examination of any given system of ethics. Presentations might include history and demonstrations of rituals, a modeling and explanation of the significance of cultural dress/ornamentation/crests/etc, or an examination of the impact of various celestial events on the aspects of daily life. Some aspect of elven culture should be involved in each presentation.
These are due by June 4th and should not be dropped off at the Aies Library, but rather should be dropped in my mailbox (gs4-xayle@play.net). Once all the submissions are in, they?ll be narrowed down to 9, and those 9 will be announced. Submissions should include your character's name, race, title of the presentation, a complete run-down of the presentation (from what will be spoken to a detailed outline of any rituals or demonstrations to be performed, and they should be IC in nature), and whether or not the event would need to take place at night (in the case of a celestial type of presentation). Submissions received after the due date will automatically be excluded.
Any questions can be directed to the above address.
Happy ponderings,
~ X.
Calling all scholars...
Author: GS4-XAYLE
Date: 5/14/2007 9:14:02 PM
Calling all scholars and leaders of academia:
At this year's Lumnea Festival, there will be a symposium on the evolution of elven culture. Entrants are limited to those of pure elven heritage. Faendryl and half-elves may not enter. This is not to be mistaken as a recitation of history lessons. These compositions are to be original in nature, though it is acceptable to use published works as references. This is an exercise in and a celebration of knowledge and academics purely for their own sakes.
Any aspect of elven culture you wish to explore is acceptable and submissions must be in by the 4th of Lumnea. You must include in your submission your name, given profession, the title of your presentation, and a copy of the presentation in its entirety. These performances should be no longer than fifteen minutes in length.
Out of all the submissions, nine will be chosen to give their lectures at the symposium and will be judged by a council of three elven scholars. With consideration to execution, academic relevance, and creativity, the judges will select three winners.
These winners will receive bound copies of their lectures, as well as a token of appreciation, which will be presented in a formal ceremony.
Please drop your submission scrolls off at the Aies Library in Ta'Illistim.
Regards,
Ayimare Chaaniela, Scholar of House Ta'Illistim
The Ceremony of Remembrance Quest
Author: GS4-LOTHWYN
Date: 4/1/2007 5:09:32 PM
For many aelotoi, life upon their home world was harsh and cruel. What joy they found was often robbed of them immediately, and punishment quickly ensued. Fearful of their cruel Overlords, the kiramon, the aelotoi created many traditions that were passed by word of mouth through the generations.
The Ceremony of Remembrance is one such tradition.
The aelotoi's love of colors and flowers is well known; however, in their days of servitude, this love was destroyed and greeted with severe punishment. Unwilling to do anything to draw the eyes of their Overlords, the aelotoi began to secret away flowers that could still be found on the torn world. At night, the Elders would collect the flowers and bring them to the tiny cook fires that they were allowed to huddle around. Each member of the group would whisper, as soft as can be so that the Overlords did not hear them, the name of an ancestor that had passed beyond. As the names were shared, the Elders would drop a flower into the fire. This was a sign of respect to those who have passed before them, and a gesture of sending the flowers on to their ancestors, so they may enjoy them in the place beyond in peace and freedom.
At the Dragonfly Festival, Assistant Eyaeno will ask those who attend, and are willing, to go out on a quest around the world for the Ceremony of Remembrance. The ceremony will be performed near the ending days of the festival. In exchange for services provided to anyone who participates, and completes the quest, Eyaeno will give the person a gift. The gift is a cherished treasure that is often only given to aelotoi who venture out from Cysaegir, so they may find the solace of home at the beat of iridescent wings.
Important Note: Those who finish among the top 25 will find their trinket of the Aelotoi is more in tune with the nature of the dragonfly.
Eyaeno can be found in the garden.
For many aelotoi, life upon their home world was harsh and cruel. What joy they found was often robbed of them immediately, and punishment quickly ensued. Fearful of their cruel Overlords, the kiramon, the aelotoi created many traditions that were passed by word of mouth through the generations.
The Ceremony of Remembrance is one such tradition.
The aelotoi's love of colors and flowers is well known; however, in their days of servitude, this love was destroyed and greeted with severe punishment. Unwilling to do anything to draw the eyes of their Overlords, the aelotoi began to secret away flowers that could still be found on the torn world. At night, the Elders would collect the flowers and bring them to the tiny cook fires that they were allowed to huddle around. Each member of the group would whisper, as soft as can be so that the Overlords did not hear them, the name of an ancestor that had passed beyond. As the names were shared, the Elders would drop a flower into the fire. This was a sign of respect to those who have passed before them, and a gesture of sending the flowers on to their ancestors, so they may enjoy them in the place beyond in peace and freedom.
