BEELA, CURATOR OF THE STORMBROW GALLERY, INVITES ALL ARTISTS TO SUBMIT WORKS FOR CONSIDERATION FOR DISPLAY IN THE CULTURAL ROOM OF THE MUSEUM!
This contest is intended to spark new ideas. If you have something already in existence that you wish to donate, and have missed the previous donation times, please email me at GS4-LIIA@PLAY.NET with the item description. Your subject line should read STORMBROW DONATION.
Submission criteria:
Allowable types of arts and crafts:
*Paintings depicting daily life or cultural aspects of Kharam Dzu and Teras Isle
*Sculptures depicting daily life or cultural aspects of Kharam Dzu and Teras Isle
*Traditional dwarven or Terasian clothing
*Traditional dwarven or Terasian jewelry
*Other obviously traditional dwarven or Terasian "fluff" items that would depict the same
Technical requirements:
*Items must have a 15/15/15 base description AND a show. Items must show cultural and/or daily life aspects of Teras Isle. The items should be current day and age, not of historical significance. For example, a painting of someone feeding the Mule at the statue would be current; a painting of a dinner on Ghorsa's air balloon would not.
*Weapons and armor are not included for the purposes of this contest.
*The deadline for submissions is FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2008. More than one submission per person is allowable.
Email all submissions to GS4-LIIA@PLAY.NET with MUSEUM CULTURAL ART CONTEST as the subject. Please send a separate email for each item you wish to enter. Include your character AND account name with each submission.
Winners will be chosen based on creativity, appropriate content, accuracy based on in-game existences and/or official documentation, and standard game policy. GM Liia reserves the right to tweak the winning submissions for QC approval. Winning entries will be displayed in the Stormbrow Gallery with recognition of the artist. You do NOT have to be a Teras citizen to participate!

ISP Maintenance Tonight!

SAVVIS (that's our ISP) has identified an issue with a network device that aggregates connections (that's you!) to customer locations in the Saint Louis area (that's us!).
The maintenance will clear an error that, if not addressed, could (Could? Hah!) cause service related issues.
This maintenance is scheduled to begin at 00:01 CDT on 07/29/08 and will be completed by 05:00 CDT on 07/29/08. In this window, SAVVIS engineers will be replacing defective hardware from a local backbone router.
Customers (that's us! and you!) may experience service outages (down!), latency (lag!), or other connectivity issues (dropped!) as the work is completed.

I just got the last of the critters collected and I wanted to update everyone on the contest.
Between GemStone and DragonRealms, there were a total of 133 creatures submitted. Well done!

In response to requests from the populace at large, Ta'Vaalor's guards have undergone sensitivity training--with mixed success. Some of the guards have learned to open up and reveal more of their personalities, while others seem to have become less friendly in response!
What does this mean to you? Each of the Vaalor guards has developed a unique name and personality, and will respond to your questions accordingly. Have fun getting to know them!

GemStone IV is currently seeking to fill several GameMaster positions with a developmental and coding focus. We will review all applications, but ideal applicants will possess one or more of the following:
- An interest in coding, preferably backed by fundamental knowledge of one or more scripting languages (ASP w/ VBScript, ASP.NEt, C#, VB.net, PHP, Python, Ruby, etc.)
- A minimum of 15 hours a week to dedicate to GemStone IV projects
- Great troubleshooting and analytical thinking skills
- Good individual and team-member habits, including the ability to take ownership of projects, be a self-starter, maintain professionalism, discipline, focus, and a sense of fun

Problems Creating New Characters

There seems to be something misconfigured somewhere between the Website, the Game, and the Billing Database that is currently preventing people from creating a new character in GemStone.
We're currently tracking down someone to look into the problem (without having to resort to waking up the Tech who stayed at the office all night, after working all day yesterday too, migrating the Billing DB over to the new server, since he's earned a short nap, at the very least).
We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to have the issue resolved ASAP!

I'm going to enlist a couple of folks to help me out in looking over all of them, but in the meantime, I wanted to pop over and make sure to ask that you update each of your creatures on your Spore page to make sure it includes GemStone and GS4 in the "tags" section, just in case other players or entrants want to peek at your stuff.
I'll be asking the DR players to do the same in case anyone wants to peek at those, too! :)

On Wednesday, July 16, our On-site Techs will be migrating the Billing Database over to their new servers, beginning at approximately 3:00 AM Eastern and ending at approximately 11:00 AM Eastern.
No new logins will be possible during this 8-hour time-period, however, any customers who are already logged in to any game should remain logged in, although some in-game services related to account status (i.e., checking Premium Time, for example) may be unavailable.
In addition, the entire website (including Forums, Account Services, etc.) will be down during this time.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

Imaera's Glade Revised, et al!

Due to several generous donations from the savvy merchants of the Mercantylers' Guild, the Green Sisters of Imaera have seen fit to extend access to a previously private altar to Imaera in her aspect as the Harvest Goddess.
Harvest's Vigil is located immediately south of the Garden of Making.
Rumors around the city suggest that Paidreg Venquinor has finished moving into his new manor in Solhaven. With the destruction of his familial home and his parents' whereabouts still unknown, the manor has been christened "Venquinor House" and will stand as the official seat of his bloodline.

In clearer terms, there's a third altar to Imaera in her glade. Venquinor House will remain locked when its owner is not in residence, but expect some public gatherings there soon.

Alchemy Recipe Correction for 213 Potion: "How Pale Was My Moonstone"

Due to an error on my part, an alchemy recipe for a Minor Sanctuary sprinkling oil was released which called for "powdered blue moonstone". The recipe has been corrected and the ingredient changed to "powdered pale blue moonstone", which was what was originally intended. As always, see the NPC training masters (not the task administrators) in your local guild and ask them to update your tomes and recipe pages if they are now in error. I regret any inconvenience this has caused, and I caused any inconvenience that I'm now regretting.

Thanks to the hard work of Ta'Vaalor's fishing crews, the people of Ta'Vaalor now have a new fishing shack just at the edge of the Mistydeep River Dock. Complete with a cookfire and all your requisite fishing supplies, the Fishing Shack wants your custom!
It's the height of the season for fishing in Ta'Vaalor. Clever fishermen will discover that the Mistydeep River is teeming with fish. So drop a line off the dock and catch what you can!

Solhaven Presents... New Temples!

Solhaven's collective religious orders are pleased to welcome two brand new temples and a shrine into their ranks.
Eonak's Temple, having largely fallen into disrepair, was abandoned by the Order of Steel. Due to a deal brokered by Lord Paidreg Venquinor, the land was given to the Order of Voln, where they established a new outpost known as Fasthr's Lance.
Eonak's new religious site, the Temple of Industry, has been built with the aid of several local organizations. In gratitude, the Steel Priests granted leave for a memorial to those lost during the Griffin Sword War.
Significant overhauls have likewise been made to the enclave of the Green Sisters of Imaera, which is now linked to Eonak's by a very special garden.

Powered by reworked core magic dispelling mechanics, 'new' mass dispel spells have been added to the Major Elemental and Major Spiritual spell circles. These, named Elemental Disjunction and Spiritual Abolition respectively, fill the previously empty 30th level slots.
Spells 530 and 230 will dispel a random number of spells from a target, favoring spells from the same sphere before out-of-sphere spells. Diligent training in the appropriate spell circle (Major Elemental for spell 530, Major Spiritual for spell 230) helps to increase the minimum number of spells dispelled. Caster and target levels are also factored in determining the number of spells dispelled. At minimum one spell will always be dispelled.
For the purposes of in-sphere and out-of-sphere designation, spells from hybrid spell circles are considered to be in-sphere for both (e.g. Sorcerer Base spells are considered in-sphere for both Elemental and Spiritual dispels, Empath base spells are considered in-sphere for both Spiritual and Mental dispels, etc.).
The mana cost for these mass dispel spells is a static 30 mana.
With these new spells, and new core dispel mechanics, come some enhancements to spells 417 and 119, Elemental Dispel and Spiritual Dispel.
The mana cost for these spells is now reduced by one (1) mana per seventy-five (75) skill bonus in the mana control skill appropriate for the spell. Additionally, a chance to inflict nerve damage has been added when dispelling a prepared spell from a target as an added benefit.
The mana costs for dispelling a prepared spell or burning a target's mana remain a flat 17 mana, and are NOT affected by mana control skill training. The sphere interference cascade effect, triggered when single dispel spells of different spheres are used on the same target in combination, remains intact.
With the addition of spell 230 Spiritual Abolition, the 40th level Empath Base spell slot, previously home to the Empathic Dispel spell, has been freed for future development.

I am not going to post the list, but the game itself will be a Photo Scavenger Hunt.
I suggest, therefore, that if you want to play along and you have a digital camera that you bring it or borrow one if you don't. Any kind will work, be it an SLR, a point and shoot, or even one from your cell phone.

Those wishing to explore this area are warned to be on the lookout for ash hags and fire ogres which might also be exploring the new scenery.

Major Downtime (Sort of) Coming

As early as next week, our On-site Techs will be migrating the Billing Database over to their new servers. The actual data migration testing has taken almost 6 hours on the nose each time, so that's a fairly reliable starting point for how long this is going to take.
The impact won't be as bad as you might think, it just means people won't be able to log in during that window. If you're already in the game when we start the process, you'll be fine (unless you get booted for some reason).
To lessen the "damage", we're also planning on starting this process around 1 or 2 AM Central, which means we should be in the clear by 8 or 9 AM Central, I'd think.
Once we get a solid date, I'll let you know. The goal is to get this done by Wednesday at the latest, but since this is a 6 hour long process to "test", each bug they uncover adds at least another day to the task.

Healer Kwithi has hung up her apron for a short time to take a much needed vacation. She noted, upon packing, that the Monsoon season this year seemed to be longer than she remembered and that it was affecting her joints. She requests that everyone visiting Mist Harbor take the utmost of care with their health as she won?t be there to heal you while she is gone.
OOC Note: It appears that Kwithi has a bit of a bug in her. She decided, unbeknownst to us, that if you died near her she was going to send you out of Mist Harbor and into the streets of Ta?Vaalor. Until we can get this bugginess looked at, she?s going to be on hiatus. Please be careful when visiting Mist Harbor during this time.

The rules are as follows:

GM Liia has graciously offered to share the script for her citizen pins. If other town gurus provide her with the messaging, she'll set it up for us. So, what that means is...

2. One entry per character, preference being given to citizen entrants.

Starting off in a new place can be a bit overwhelming, so we strongly suggest posting on the forums to find a friendly Plat player to refer you (you'll need to post their account name as your referrer) and act as a mentor of sorts to help get you acclimated to the community there and answer your questions about "the rules" for Plat (such as, "What's the deal with these portals?" and "Why should I let people know where I'm hunting before I go hunting?") -- post there and you should have no problems getting the help you need! Also, get a map, dammit! (tm).

The Archmage Krylonna has made two minor adjustments to the wares in her shop. She has added "a glass jar" to her inventory, and has arranged for the runestones (in her backroom catalog) to be customizable with a selection of colors.

Demons, Guild Training Rooms, and You

Some of our towns' guilds have been stopping demons from following their summoners into the Masters' training rooms. While we're looking into this, it seems our fixes might still be a wee bit glitchy. More info coming soon as we look into the weirdness.

After certain items were brought to my attention, a few tweaks have been made to the Shop in the Sorcerer's Guild of Wehnimer's Landing:
1) Demons should now be able to follow you into a Training Room for ease in illusion training.
2) The "short-staff" (cudgel base) has been removed from the inventory and replaced with a more suitable runestaff base.
3) The two cloaks offered for sale can be customized with your choice of colors.
4) There is now a "backroom" catalog available.

GemStone Prime Test?

So...some of you may have noticed by now that we have a "GemStone Prime Test" instance showing up on the SGE. What does that mean?
Here are a few things to know:
1) The Test Server will usually be closed or locked. The Test server is NOT for people to just run around and "play" in. It's for actual play-testing of things that we want input on, but aren't too keen about releasing into a live instance and "forcing" onto people.
2) It will sometimes be open for Alpha Testers. Who are Alpha Testers? For now, anyone with an active Platinum subscription will be set up as an Alpha Tester. We will probably be accepting applications for more Alpha Testers shortly, however. More information on that soon. However, we want this Alpha Testing group to remain small.
3) Beta Testing will sometimes be open to everyone. When we open for Beta Testing, we'll simply ask that when you log in, you are actively testing what we have asked to be tested. Don't log in expecting to just run around and do your own thing or (worse yet) disrupt actual testing that is taking place.
4) We will be regularly updating the characters in the Test Instance with your own characters from Prime and we're going to attempt to update with Plat characters, too, but we're frankly not quite sure how (or if) that will actually work out. GMs have the ability and authority to adjust your character and provide any equipment, stats, skills, and creatures needed for testing purposes, but we'll most frequently want you testing things with a character as close to your current "comfort zone" as possible so don't come into testing expecting to get anything "special". There may be times when things may be a little off or not QUITE up to date, but that's fine. "Close" is almost always going to be close enough for this sort of thing.
6) There may be things that don't work at all when you get into Test. Don't ASSIST or REPORT or BUG it. It's probably intended.
7) This bears repeating: please do NOT log into the Test Instance just to spar, tourney, or run amuck.
8) This is mostly directed to Alpha Testers: The GMs will let you know how much of what you're testing can be discussed on the forums and how much they would like you to keep quiet. It won't do a lot of good for people to get all worked up (positively or negatively) over something that may change, so systems, spells, or other things that are tenuous or in flux may be things they want to you just keep quiet for a bit. We'll see about making a private Alpha Testing Topic/Category on the Forums for closed discussions, though.
Once the staff makes sure everything is stable and up to date, I'll let them arrange all the whos, whats, whens, whys, and hows of it. The "where" is the easy part. :)

Did you think that The Shining City would be left out of the verb frenzy? Naaaah! So, here is your opportunity to impact the ambiance in Ta'Illistim. The winning verb (or verbs) will be implemented for use by those with Ta'Illistim citizenship.
Your friendly Royal Overseer (no doubt inspired by that delicious Illistim champagne at the Lumnea festival) announces THE Ta'Illistim verb contest. Send in your own inspiration to use on common verbs and how they might be better used by Illistim citizens to express all manners of attitude, emotion, or action.
"All verbs are open to your interpretation, but try to keep them reasonable and useful in a wide variety of situations. For each verb, you will need to provide:
1) The messaging the verb's user sees when directing the verb at another player.
2) The messaging the verb's user sees when directing the verb at himself or herself.
3) The messaging the verb's user sees when directing the verb at a creature.
4) The messaging the verb's user sees when directing the verb at an object.
5) The messaging another player sees when the verb is directed at him or her.
